How do you control spam and irrelevant inappropriate comments?
I'm completely new to this and have not signed up for this yet. Trying to do some research before jumping on the wagon. How do one control spam or inappropriate or irrelevant comments? This is my main concern.
Can this offering be also plugged into a forum environment?

Inappropriate?Hello!
Thanks for researching about Echo and how you can control content posted by your visitors.
Here are some answers, feel free to ask if you need more details.
- in the admin dashboard, there is a section where you can add inappropriate words. Comments added which contain those words will not show in the comment thread.
- Echo is using Akismet, a powerful and intelligent spam filter. Not only does it prevent a comment to show if it's identified as spam, but we also have a "flag" button that the community can use to mark as spam. This improves the abilities of Akismet. You can also set the number of times you require the community to "flag" a comment before it is automatically removed from the thread.
- Echo has several moderation modes and controls. You can for example ask to always approve a comment before it gets displayed in the thread. You can know more about moderation options here: http://wiki.js-kit.com/Admin+Guide+-+....
- As an administrator, you can also moderate each comment manually one by one, such as delete, block, etc... and that can be done directly in the Echo widget in addition to being able to perform those tasks in the admin dashboard
- Echo allows also to ban users by IP address or by "user". There is a "banned" manager in the admin dashboard so that you can un-ban them later.
The list of related features is available in the wiki:

Hope this helps! -
Inappropriate?every day i receive several of those spam js-kit comment like the one i left
on this page:
http://www.loupiote.com/photos/318133...
basically they contain a URL to a site being adverised by spamming
js-comments.
i also get many similar type of spam by email, so clearly this is a new
genre of spam that spammers are using the last few months. could you do
something to prevent those?
or maybe, could you offer an option to prevent people from posting any HTML
link in thier comments, until this spam problem gets resolved? if links are
not allowed in comments, it would remove an incentive for spammers to try to
get people to click on them.
please let me know what you think of that, and how your Akismet friends
intend to deal to that. -
Hi tristan,
See the Philippe's answer above, also I think you'll find helpful information in this similar topic: How can we see what Akismet is doing? -
Inappropriate?i know about Akismet , but apparently they are not good at detecting those sort of spam.
i would really like to have an option to disallow all comments that contain an html link. that would take care of a lot of the spam posted on js-kit comment. -
You can ban such spamers by IP or Name.
Regarding this feature: "disallow all comments that contain an html link" - could you post it as an idea? We'll take it for consideration. -
Inappropriate?> You can ban such spamers by IP or Name.
you must be joking.
you certainely know well that spammers are actually not human. they are using sophisticated bots, and those constantly change IP (using bot-nets), and change user names (or post as guest). -
In this case you need to enable "Require anonymous users to authenticate before leaving comments" option. -

i already mentioned it to Anna Shtraus who works for js-kit. this is quite an obvious idea, and i would hope that some people in charge of the spam issue know about it, if they are not completely brainless :) -
Inappropriate?> In this case you need to enable "Require anonymous users to authenticate before leaving comments" option.
i don't want to require authentication. i do want to allow guests (anonymous) users to post, and that's why my site is configuted this way.
of course, i am fully aware that it is easier for spammers to post as guests, but still if there was an option to disallows any comment that contains a link or URL, this would not be such a problem.
if such an option was available, i would use it, since it is very unlikely that someone would want to post a link in my comments - besides spammers.
and by the way, spammers often have way to authenticate (look at flickr: it is plagged by spammers who are able to automatically create any number of yahoo accounts automatically, and then post spam on flickr). so requiring authentication would certainely reduce the number of "legit" comments, but the relative amount of spam (vs legit comments) will probably remain the same.
as long as spammers are allowed to post a comment that contains a link to their website, they have an incentive to post spam. -

Inappropriate?Having a huge problem with Trackback spam. I recently installed Echo onto my blog - process was great. However, about a week or 2 later now, I noticed that almost all posts on my blog have crazy trackback spams on it - stuff that is "obviously" a spam. I never received emails that these were being posted. I honestly can't even use Echo, since there is no way to even mass-delete these spams - my only option is to remove Echo altogether. Any ideas? My site is http://systembash.com.
